Crow Fledglings Growing Up (Fabian & June's Family) | Urban Nature & Wildlife
Over the past 2+ years, I've had the wonderful opportunity to befriend a wild crow that lives in the area. When I first encountered him I had no idea what would become of it, no idea how meaningful it would become. Through knowing him, I've had the chance to appreciate and learn so much more about the lives of crows. It has continuously inspired me to observe and appreciate the amazing animals we share our lives with. As time went on and my videos of him accumulated, it felt more and more important to share his story, in the chance it can inspire others in similar ways too. Editing down this video to just about 10 minutes was one of the hardest parts, since I have hours upon hours of footage of him, his family, and the other crows in the area. It was almost overwhelming to figure out what to do with all that, and how to do this video justice. I'm so happy to have finished this, not because it's perfect or completely covers everything I could possibly say in this introductory video, but because it's really meaningful for me to finally be able to share Fabian's story. Fabian the Crow – An Unlikely Friendship | Urban Nature & Wildlife
I recently had a serendipitous encounter with a juvenile great blue heron at a garden in a fairly busy part of the city! I had the chance to capture some great footage of it and shared some wonderful moments with other passersby. Juvenile Great Blue Heron Resting/Napping & Grooming Itself in City Garden | Urban Nature & Wildlife
A few short clips of a crow family (2 parents and their child, who is still a juvenile) allopreening, an affectionate behaviour that strengthens bonds between each other. Crows are really bright, loving individuals who are fiercely loyal to each other, with offspring continuing to spend time with and/or visit their parents well into adulthood. This is a particular crow family that I know very well, and I was lucky enough to have followed their story throughout the past 2 years. I spotted this adorable mink after observing some crows cawing out in alarm. It was right in the middle of the city and even ran across a bike path, but still skittish. Wild Mink in the City | Urban Nature & Wildlife
Pelagic cormorants around here are generally quite nervous birds, and will normally never come close to a human. However, this one was uncharacteristically bold and came ashore not too far from where I was filming some crows. It spent quite some time there preening itself as well as drying off its feathers, something which cormorants have to do frequently seeing as they are seabirds who dive underwater to hunt. *About* ------------------------------ Hi! Pelagic Cormorant Resting On Shore (Preening and Drying Feathers) | Urban Nature & Wildlife
Crows are famously playful and mischievous and have been known to pull on the tails of animals much larger than they are for fun. This one also picked up a pebble and dropped it on the heron, who was grumpily just trying to groom itself in peace. *About* ------------------------------ Hi! I was out on a walk and heard some loud chirping coming from a nearby building. I went closer and realised the sound was coming from a vent on the outside of the building. After observing for a bit longer I saw the sparrow parents going in and out of the (very small) vent, as well as mouths of their hungry chicks! *About* ------------------------------ Hi! Sparrows Nesting in Building Vent | Urban Wildlife
Last summer I travelled to Duncan's Cove, Nova Scotia, a beautiful hiking place by the Atlantic Ocean. Some friendly hikers pointed out a large group of seals in the distance - they were so well camouflaged on the rocks that they were very hard to spot at first! It was a great time filming them (apologies for the shaky footage at times as I had to zoom a lot with my camera), and they were a delight to observe. *About* ------------------------------ Hi! Adorable Duckling Siblings | Urban Wildlife
More details: I was taking a walk in a park in the city when I noticed a large group of crows who seemed very agitated about something. Normally, this indicates that there is a threat/predator nearby, so I watched them for a while, intrigued. It took me quite some time to notice the Cooper's Hawk - and I only saw it after zooming in a lot with my video camera. It has great camouflage and was virtually invisible in the fall foliage. Cooper's hawks are a member of a genus otherwise known as true hawks - they are swift, agile birds of prey, and can easily take down many other different species of birds (which are their main food source). Crows are one of them, so it's no surprise that the presence of a Cooper's hawk around would agitate them so much. As I watched, more and more crows joined - likely drawn to the commotion by the noises. Crows are social and can demonstrate remarkable teamwork, so they clearly joined to try and help. I followed the bird drama for quite some time - around 30-45 minutes, running from tree to tree and hurting my neck by craning up so much lol. For a while, all the crows were able to do was to chase the hawk from one tree to the next. None of them got near enough to actually touch the hawk nor did any major fighting ensue. It mostly consisted of loud vocalizations and displays of threat/warning. The hawk seemed confused but not entirely too fazed about what was going on. A curious thing I noticed was that throughout all of this, I could see certain crows breaking off twigs, ripping at tree bark, and pecking at leaves, and I'm not sure why they were doing so - whether it was a display of intimidation or whether they were simply anxious and stressed. This all only ended when the large group of crows chased the hawk far away from the park, where it was too far for me to run and follow them. It was nearing the evening by this point. Afterwards, the crows began their nightly "migration" back to their main roost out east - a place where, famously, all the crows from this area return to every night to socialize and sleep. Funnily enough, as soon as they were gone, I caught a last glimpse of the hawk coming back to the park. I couldn't find it again, but I assume it returned after the threat of being continuously mobbed by crows was gone. As a note, I later did some research and realized that this particular Cooper's hawk is still a juvenile - not a fledgling anymore but still quite young. It doesn't have its adult plumage yet and its eyes are still yellow rather than dark orange-red. It is probably still learning what is safe to do and what isn't, and how it feels in general about crows. *About* ------------------------------ Hi! Pet Snail Timelapse – Garden/Grove Snail Activities
Remember that snail keeping/caring for snail babies is a complicated process and requires some serious consideration of the regulations/ethics around it. Please check out the various forums and info online on what to do if your snails lay eggs (which adults will always do in the right conditions), and remember to never, ever release domesticated snails and eggs into the wild regardless of what you might see some people suggest. This is highly unethical and can be destructive to the local ecosystem as snails are defined as agricultural pests. In many places especially in the US, releasing them is downright illegal. I love my snails and all animals very much, but it is necessary to balance that with the realistic considerations around the care/breeding of any living organism. Snails can easily multiply exponentially, and it is always in the best interest of the snail species itself to act in place of natural selection if natural selection itself is not present: this keeps them healthy and happy, and prevents some painful, drawn out deaths for sickly babies.
